Held near Earth Day each year, our Spring Planting and River Clean-Up plays a major part in the environmental restoration of the Trail. The annual program is a collaborative effort with Friends of Milwaukee’s Rivers, Menomonee Valley Partners and WE Energies.
The day starts off with a presentation by DNR Trail Manager Melissa Cook about the history of the Menomonee River Valley and Hank Aaron State Trail, restoration accomplishments and their impact on the river, and visions for the future. Volunteers are then asked to pitch in by planting trees and shrubs, and by collecting and removing trash and debris from the river, banks, and the Trail. After all the hard work, volunteers are treated to a cookout and other goodies under the 35th Street viaduct.
Last year was a huge success, drawing close to 100 eager volunteers, including participants from surrounding neighborhoods, CH2M HILL, WE Energies, Marquette University, UWM, Notre Dame School, FOHAST, P&H Mining, the Sierra Club, and several other organizations. Lots of trash was collected and many trees and shrubs were planted. Thanks to all who made it a very good day!
The efforts are making a real difference along the Trail and in the Menomonee River Valley. We hope you'll join us next year to continue the good work!
